Paul Hyon Kim, a 36-year-old resident of Las Vegas, has been charged by the federal government on suspicion of arson and illegal possession of firearms. According to the US Department of Justice, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department received a report that someone threw Molotov cocktails and fired shots at a Tesla crash vehicle, and graffiti “Resistance” was also found at the scene. The fire department quickly put out the fire, but five Tesla vehicles and some buildings were damaged.
Investigators found multiple firearms at Kim’s residence, including an AR rifle that matched the crime scene, as well as a black hoodie, a mask and notes suspected to be part of an escape plan. Kim was arrested and is currently in federal detention. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for illegally possessing unregistered firearms, and the crime of arson may be sentenced to 5 to 20 years in prison.
This case was jointly investigated by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, ATF and the Clark County Fire Department. The prosecution was handled by Jacob Operskalski, the assistant prosecutor of the United States, and Patrick Cashman, the counter-terrorism lawyer. The case is still under further investigation.
