In 2024, vehicle thefts in the United States decreased by 17% year-on-year, marking the largest annual decline in 40 years. Data shows that the total number of stolen vehicles across the country has dropped from 1.02 million in 2023 to 850,000, falling below 1 million for the first time since 2021. Washington State, Nevada and Oregon saw the most significant declines, dropping by 32%, 31% and 30% respectively, while Maine was the only state with an increase, with theft cases rising by 2%.
The Hyundai Elantra became the most stolen model in 2024, with 31,712 units, followed by the Hyundai Sonata, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Honda Accord and Kia Optima. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) of the United States pointed out that although some vehicle models still face a relatively high risk of theft, the overall trend has shown a significant improvement.
David J. Glawe, the president of NICB, attributed this achievement to multi-party cooperation, including the joint efforts of law enforcement agencies, automakers and related institutions. He said that through data analysis and preventive strategies, various regions have been able to combat vehicle theft crimes more effectively, thus achieving this positive change.
