On June 12, 2025, Michigan State University announced that it had reached a settlement of approximately 30 million US dollars with the three survivors of the 2023 campus shooting. Three students – Nathan Statly, Yukai “John” Hao and Troy Forbush – received compensations of 14.2 million, 13 million and 2.5 million US dollars respectively. Statly was shot in the head, Hao was paralyzed due to a shot in the back, and Forbush was shot in the chest. The school authorities stated that they hope the settlement can provide some support and comfort to the victims and their families.
This shooting incident occurred in 2023. A 43-year-old man, Anthony McRae, who had no connection with the school, opened fire in two buildings, killing three students and injuring five others. The families of the three victims – Brian Fraser, Arielle Anderson and Alexandria Verner – reached a settlement with the school authorities at the end of 2023. The gunman committed suicide after confronting the police that night.
This settlement marks an important step for the school authorities in handling the aftermath of the shooting incident. Although the specific settlement terms have not been made public, the school authorities emphasized that they hope these measures can help the victims and their families alleviate their suffering and promote further improvements in campus security.
