A pipeline contractor in California was ordered to pay $1 million in compensation for worker compensation fraud. Daniela G. Birdwell, a 41-year-old owner of GPS Plumbing, pleaded guilty to one count of fraud in workers’ compensation insurance premiums. In addition to the compensation, she was sentenced to two years of probation, 320 hours of community service, and a monthly compensation of $10,000.
The fraud occurred between June 2016 and May 2021, when the national fund provided workers’ compensation insurance for GPS Plumbing. Investigators found that there were differences between the wages reported by the company to the Employment Development Department and the amounts declared to the national fund. After the audit, millions of dollars of unreported payrolls were confirmed.
The case was submitted by the state Fund Special Investigation Team to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office and the California Department of Insurance for investigation. Deputy District Attorney David Bagheri was responsible for the prosecution. This judgment aims to recover the fraudulent funds and warn other enterprises to comply with labor insurance regulations.
