On June 11th, Erie Indemnity Co. filed a document with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), confirming that its five-day network outage originated from a data security vulnerability. The company stated that after discovering abnormal online activities on June 7th, it immediately took measures to protect the system and jointly launched an investigation with law enforcement departments and third-party cybersecurity experts. At present, the full scope and impact of the incident have not been clarified. However, customers still cannot access their online accounts or contact online customer service. They need to handle business through local agents or designated phone numbers.
This incident is not an isolated case. Philadelphia Insurance Co. also reported a network outage on the same day, resulting in the paralysis of its phone, email and online services. Erie Insurance emphasized that it would not demand payment by phone or email during the interruption period, and reminded customers to be vigilant against the risks of unknown links and personal information leakage.
As a property/casualty Insurance company with over 7,000 employees and 14,000 agents, Erie Insurance stated that local agents and customer service teams will continue to provide services, while calling on customers to handle emergencies through official channels. The investigation is still ongoing and subsequent progress will be announced in due course.
