Insurers have reported over 6,000 claims stemming from the recent floods in the Mid-North Coast and Hunter regions, with approximately 80% of these claims related to home damage. The rapid increase—more than 20% since yesterday—highlights the extensive impact and signals a long-term recovery process requiring sustained community support.
To assist affected residents, the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) and insurance providers have mobilized substantial resources. An Insurance Hub has been established at the Taree Leagues Sport Centre, offering claims support until June 13. Additionally, insurer representatives are stationed at local Recovery Centres to provide streamlined recovery assistance.
The ICA has also activated a dedicated catastrophe operations team to coordinate insurer responses and support efforts. With the event officially upgraded to an Insurance Catastrophe, insurers are deploying extra resources and prioritizing claims related to the floods.
In response to the high volume of claims, insurers have enhanced communication channels, including customer advocacy services, direct text messaging updates, and specialized training for staff to better support vulnerable customers. These measures aim to improve access to assistance and accelerate claim processing.
Andrew Hall, CEO of the Insurance Council of Australia, emphasized the severity of the situation: “It is confronting to see the extent of the damage across the region, and it is clear the recovery will take time, meaning ongoing support is essential.” Hall also encouraged those affected to visit the Insurance Hub for personalized claim guidance, stating, “Insurers will continue to maintain a presence on the ground, and we urge anyone needing help with their claim to come and speak with our dedicated support staff.”
The insurance industry continues to prioritize improving catastrophe response, building on lessons from the unprecedented 2022 floods to ensure impacted communities receive timely and trustworthy insurance support.
