A recent study by FWD Philippines reveals a striking contrast in the gaming community: while 85% of Filipino gamers recognize the importance of having insurance, only 30% actually prioritize obtaining coverage.
In its 10th-anniversary celebration, FWD Philippines launched “Decoding the Pinoy Gamer,” a comprehensive report examining the behaviors, well-being, and financial practices of 943 Filipino gamers and esports enthusiasts.
Roche Vandenberghe, FWD Philippines’ Chief Marketing and Digital Business Officer, emphasized the company’s commitment to the gaming community, stating, “Supporting the gaming community – from developers, players, and fans – is part of our efforts to contribute to nation-building.”
The study notes significant growth in the Filipino gaming community, predominantly made up of Gen Z and millennials, which expanded by 14.3% between 2020 and 2023. Gamers are categorized based on their gaming habits, spending, and motivations.
The largest groups, Fans (34%) and Casuals (30%), play less frequently, while Enthusiasts (20%), Influencers (13%), and Pros (4%) are more active and invest more in their gaming activities. The burgeoning esports scene has driven many Filipinos toward professional gaming careers, bringing with it challenges such as eye problems (41%), insomnia (17%), and migraines (15%).
The study also identifies gamers’ top priorities: building their own houses (73%) for Fans and starting businesses (70%) for Enthusiasts. Despite a general emphasis on savings and life insurance, only three in ten gamers currently have insurance coverage, with 40% citing a lack of adequate knowledge to make informed decisions.
In response, FWD Philippines introduced a specialized insurance product, The One, tailored for gamers. Additionally, they became the official insurer for professional esports athletes in the 12th season of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL-PH). This initiative has significantly boosted FWD’s gamer policyholders, reflecting their dedication to empowering more Filipinos in the gaming community.
