In 2025, an F3 tornado hit St. Louis, Missouri, causing about 1 billion US dollars in damage and affecting nearly 5,000 properties. The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance (DCI) has initially estimated that the uninsured rate in the severely affected Northern County area is extremely high. Among them, about 90% of renters and 67% of homeowners in the 63115, 63107 and 63113 zip code areas may not be insured. The uninsured rates in the densely populated communities of 63147, 63108 and 63112 are also relatively high, reaching 63% for renters and 49% for homeowners respectively.
Angela Nelson, the director of DCI, said that although the data is only an estimate and may vary, it reflects the severe challenges faced in post-disaster recovery. This department has only collected data on insurance companies covering 88% of the homeowner market and is unable to provide an exact number of uninsured individuals. However, it hopes to offer a reference for policymakers to assess demand. Communities such as Richmond Heights (63117) and Clifton (63105), which were less affected by the disaster, had a lower proportion of uninsured individuals.
This tornado made landfall in Clayton and moved northeastward to Illinois, with a path as long as 23 miles. The municipal government and the insurance department are striving to coordinate post-disaster assistance, but the high uninsured rate may delay the reconstruction process.
